Description

KILLER NAVAJO COAL MINE MESA TAPESTRY RUG, *MASTER WEAVING, EXCEPTIONAL CONDITION! An incredible vintage Navajo with exceptional coloration, artistry, condition and value! This Burntwater/Teec Nos Pos hybrid is a masterpiece of Navajo Art. COAL MINE MESA NAVAJO RUGS: “Coal Mine Mesa NAVAJO RUGS are known for their unusual raised outline technique, where the joins between the pattern motifs are thick and rise above the rug's surface. Typically, weavers using this technique also alternate two contrasting colors of single weft threads. As the weaver tamps the wool into the warp, these wefts appear to be thin stripes that run parallel to each warp thread. The Coal Mine Mesa trading post no longer exists. The former trading post area is now part of the Hopi Reservation, having been reallocated from the Navajo to the Hopi during the 1974 Navajo-Hopi Land Settlement Act. A 20th C development in Navajo weaving, these rugs combine Burntwater soft, vegetal-dyed colors with a Teec Nos Pos design, and are often of a raised outline method of construction; a special weaving technique where areas of the rug are filled with fine vertical pinstripes of subtle colors. This weaving method results in raised, three-dimensional ridges outlining the edges of the primary design elements. The raised outline method of weaving first developed in the 1930's.” *NEW! MASTER WEAVE PRICING: In addition to a general guide on condition for Navajo textiles that I provide, an ebay first, prices for the exceptional weavings I sell on ebay as BUY IT NOW sometimes do not have a MAKE OFFER option for the simple reason that they are bargains to begin with, generally 50% (or less!) of what one would expect to pay if they were to shop anywhere where quality Navajo Rugs are sold, such as Toadlena Trading Post (since 1870s). The added value being that many of the Navajo weavings I sell are actually Vintage or Antique rather than brand new. Consequently, they tend to be rarer and more valuable examples in the marketplace. Nice size measuring approximately 30” x 60”. Exceptional condition. Fresh to the market. Everything guaranteed as stated. FREE Shipping includes full insurance. Please check out my many other quality auctions. Ask questions if you have them. Thank you! *IN an effort to assist Buyers with understanding the way I describe the condition of Navajo weavings that I’m selling on ebay, I spoke with Navajo textile author and expert Tyrone Campbell about his ‘Classification Categories for Condition’ that he first published in his NEWSLETTER in 1981. After discussing with him that we may have to tweak it a bit because it has been 40 years since it was originally comprised and gotten nearly impossible to find weavings in excellent, let alone mint condition these days, I concluded, what the hell, why mess with a good thing. It’s a standard worth sticking to! So here it is as originally written (and with permission to reprint from Tyrone, July 2020). +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ “CLASSIFICATION CATEGORIES FOR DETERMINING PHYSICAL CONDITION FRAGMENT: Any portion of an entire weaving. DETERIORATED: Heavily damaged, warps exposed, selvage missing, large holes, serious fading or running, corners or areas missing. AVERAGE: Shows floor wear or small holes, some selvage damage, very minor bleeding, etc. GOOD: Above average classification may still show use, but not broken warps. In some cases a very small hole or two or a minor selvage break or two is acceptable. EXCELLENT: No holes, no bleeding or fading, no exposed warps or serious selvage damage. MINT: This classification means that the textile is in pristine condition. NOTE: In the case of rare weavings we will up-grade the condition classification from Average to Good or from Good to Excellent, but in no case to Mint or from Deteriorated to Average condition.” From THE TYRONE D. CAMPBELL NEWSLETTER, Published at Albuquerque, N.M., 1981. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Absolutely beautiful pottery piece-as described. Professional seller reached out to me assuring the piece would arrive safely as he double boxed the item using lots of fillers to insure its safe journey. If it hadn't been for the terrific packing, the piece might have been damaged in shipping do to the careless handling of the package by the USPS (outer box had a hole in it right next to the big red label-Fragile). Long & short of it-Professional seller sent FAST shipping & SUPER packing-Thanks!

This is a delightful little antique handled bowl with a gracefully flaring rim and one of the solid floral motifs of its time. It’s in quite good condition for its considerable age, and the seller packed it carefully to help it move on to its next home in a continuing long life. Seller is always helpful and knowledgeable, and can be counted on for good communication and sound advice. The little basket was sent on its way promptly and it is now a charmingly calm presence here. Excellent seller!

Have bought several items from this seller and will continue to do so. Items come securely packaged and are mailed within days of purchased. Only concern was that I bought 2 items each one on consecutive days and asked for them to be shipped together to save on postage. Paid full price of item and shipping on each item. Items shipped together but received no credit for expected shipping savings.
