Timothy H. O'Sullivan (1840–1882) was a pioneering American photographer best known for his work documenting the American Civil War and the landscapes of the American West. As a photographer for Mathew Brady, O'Sullivan captured some of the most haunting and memorable images of Civil War battlefields. After the war, he joined several government expeditions, including the Geological Exploration of the Fortieth Parallel, producing striking images of the vast, rugged terrains of the West. His stark, unromanticized landscapes and technical mastery helped shape the genre of documentary photography, influencing generations of photographers with his pioneering visual style.
